Field Hockey knocks off #19 Saint Joseph’s, LHU wins in shootout

The LHU field hockey team upset another top-20 opponent this season as the Bald Eagles recorded a thrilling shootout-victory over No. 19 Saint Joseph’s.

PHILADELPHIA – The Lock Haven University field hockey team (3-1, 3-1 A-10) recorded another upset of a nationally-ranked conference opponent as the Bald Eagles edged out No. 19 Saint Joseph's (3-2, 2-1 A-10) in a shootout for an important Atlantic 10 Conference (A-10) road-victory. Credited with a 1-0 win today, Lock Haven moved to 3-1 overall on the season.

The Bald Eagles are now 3-1 in A-10 action as well, as all four games this spring have been conference contests.

Lock Haven's victory today snapped a six-match losing streak to Saint Joseph's and marked LHU's first win over the Hawks since October 17, 2014 (W, 2-0). Entering today's contest, Saint Joseph's had won 28 consecutive Atlantic 10 regular season and tournament games.

Today's win was also the second upset-win this spring for Lock Haven. Back on March 25, the Bald Eagles upset Massachusetts – then ranked No. 20 – in double overtime, 2-1.

Goalkeeper Joaquina Orlandini (Concordia, Argentina/San Antonio School) helped carry Lock Haven to the win. She was credited with six saves over 80 minutes of shutout-play, including a pair of game-saving stops in the second overtime period.

In the end, Lock Haven edged out the hosts 2-1 in the shootout after both Amy Stevens (Castle Creek, N.Y./Whitney Point) and Jazmin Palma (Entre Rios Province, Argentina/Colegio Sagrado Corazon de Jesus) converted on their opportunities, lifting The Haven to the win column.

Hawk goalkeeper Robin Bleekemolen made three saves.

During the 60 minutes of regulation play and the 20 minutes of OT, Lock Haven rattled off six shots. Stevens, Palma and Karina Long (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) each had two shots apiece in 80 total minutes for LHU.

The Bald Eagles effort on defense was also a difference maker as they fought off 19 Hawks' corners.

The Bald Eagles will return home for their final home game of the spring 2021 regular season. LHU will host La Salle on Saturday, April 17 at noon and the game will mark Lock Haven's 2020-21 Senior Day. Back on March 19, LHU topped La Salle on the road, 2-1.

Celebrating a 75th anniversary:
During this special 2021 spring season, the LHU field hockey program is celebrating a milestone anniversary. The 2020-21 season marks the 75th anniversary of the first field hockey season back in 1945-46. The Bald Eagles first official varsity season came during the fall of 1945. The first varsity contest in program history came on October 20, 1945 and resulted in a victory. Since that first win, many more have followed, to go along with a number of other prestigious honors, including 69 winning seasons, 15 conference championships and seven national titles.
