LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University tennis team is set to open its season at Kutztown (1-2) against the Golden Bears on Tuesday, April 6 at 3 p.m.

Back in the fall of 2019, in the sports first official season since reinstatement, the Bald Eagles sent two individuals, Delani Wolever (Northumberland, Pa./Shikellamy) and Hailey Risley (North Bend, Pa./Bucktail) to the PSAC Singles and Doubles Championships. Both players will return this season and lead the Bald Eagles in action this coming Tuesday.

The LHU tennis team has a busy schedule down the stretch. They are scheduled to play Millersville, Shippensburg, West Chester and Bloomsburg all over a five day stretch spanning from April 16 to April 20. Of those four competitions, Lock Haven will play host to two of those meets against Shippensburg and Bloomsburg.

The season will culminate with the currently scheduled PSAC Championships beginning on April 27.

Since the programs return, it has experienced a steady growth to eleven student-athletes, providing important depth for the team and its contingency. Head Coach John Machak has taken the reigns in growing the young program and is steady on scoring the programs first victory in nearly 30 years. Following the opening 2019 fall season, the 2020 spring season and fall seasons were cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Back in August, Machak sat down with the GoLHU.com staff to discuss the upcoming year. When questioned about his vision for the 2021 season, his response was simply, "A lot of competitive tennis and winning" and the upcoming season may be a testament to his vision.

Back on Sunday September 15, 2019, the program made its official return to competition as the Bald Eagles played host to Lycoming College in the programs first home varsity tennis match since October 3, 1992. It was the first women's tennis match at Lock Haven after the August 6, 2018 announcement that LHU would be adding varsity golf to its collegiate array.

Historically, LHU has had success on the courts. The Bald Eagles went undefeated during the 1973 and 1983 season and hold over 100 total victories. Lock Haven has also crowned seven individual conference champions.
