CALIFORNIA, Pa. – The Lock Haven University football team (1-1) fell to host California (Pa.) University (2-0), 59-0, today in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East-West crossover action.
Cal, who received votes in this week's American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Division II national poll, led 21-0 after the first quarter. A 62-yard Jermal Martin punt return touchdown put the Vulcans up 35-0 early in the second quarter and the hosts led 45-0 at halftime.
The Bald Eagle defense held Cal to just 14 second-half points.
Haseem Johnson (Philadelphia/Kensington) led LHU's defensive effort with a team-high nine tackles. It matched the game-high as California-linebacker Gabe Miller also had nine stops.
Kahari Kirklin-Whitfield (Reading, Pa./Reading) finished with eight tackles,
Conner Meyer (Myersville, Md./Middletown) had seven tackles and
Charles Richardson (Philadelphia/Ben Franklin) recorded an interception for Lock Haven.
On offense,
Chris Hicks (Stafford, Va./North Stafford) made three catches while
Dymeir Still (Glassboro, N.J./Glassboro(Alderson-Broaddus) and
Jacob Sturm (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) ran for 44 and 34 yards, respectively.
For the third straight week, Lock Haven will hit the road as the Bald Eagles head to No. 8 Slippery Rock for Week-3 (Saturday, Sept. 18) action.
