Men’s Basketball caps 2022 season in PSAC Tournament, falls to Shippensburg

The LHU men’s basketball team dropped a first-round matchup with Shippensburg on the road in PSAC tournament action on Monday night.

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The No. 6 seed Lock Haven University men's basketball team (11-16, 8-14 PSAC) fell to the No. 3 seed Shippensburg University (20-8, 16-6 PSAC), 77-64, to cap a special season in the 2022 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Basketball Tournament First Round.

Lock Haven and Shippensburg wasted no time getting into an energetic opening five minutes and LHU held a slender 11-9 lead at the 15-minute mark. The two traded buckets and with ten minutes to play the Raiders jumped in front 17-15. A frenetic pace saw end-to-end action for most of the half with neither side able to grab any sizable lead. With just under five minutes to play, DaQuan Granberry (Linwood, Pa./Chichester) hit a three-pointer to knot things up at 23-23

Shippensburg caught fire and gained a foothold in the final minutes of an entertaining first half. The Raiders closed on a 12-0 run to end the opening half and took a 37-25 lead into the break.

In the second half, the Raiders continued to build on their lead and stretched out a 16-point advantage with 16 minutes to play. The Bald Eagles tried clawing their way back into the game behind a solo five-point run from Eli Washington (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield), but the Raiders consistently responded and still held a 16-point advantage at the 12-minute mark.

Down the stretch, the Raiders hot shooting kept the Bald Eagles at bay. Ship shot 52 percent from the field and got a combined 38 points from Jake Biss and Rashon Johnson to come away with the 77-64 victory.

Washington led all players with 23 points on a strong 9-16 from the field. The sophomore also grabbed team-highs in rebounds with nine and assists with four.

Granberry was the second Bald Eagle in double figures and notched 16 points on 5-7 from the field. Jesse McPherson (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) added eight points and grabbed five boards.

The Bald Eagles edged out Shippensburg and shot 52 percent from the field compared to 51 percent for the Raiders, but a 10-6 Ship advantage in made three-pointers helped seal the win.
