Spangenberg does it again, records OT-winner & lifts Haven to victory

Martina Spangenberg once again came up huge in extra time and her game-winning strike overtime helped Lock Haven remain unbeaten at 3-0.

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Once again, Martina Spangenberg (Buenos Aries, Argentina/Piaget) saved some of her best play for the most crucial moments, and her goal 3:19 into overtime lifted the Lock Haven field hockey team (3-0) by visiting Colgate (2-2), 2-1 (OT), and helped the Bald Eagles remain unbeaten on the season.

For Lock Haven, it marked the team's second straight game that pushed into overtime, and for Spangenberg, it marked the second straight time she recorded the game-winning tally in the extra time.

With the win, Lock Haven moved to a perfect 3-0 on the season and the Bald Eagles are a perfect 2-0 at home on Charlotte Smith Field.

Today's action marked the second of six straight contests at home on Charlotte Smith Field for Lock Haven and the first game for Lock Haven since the Bald Eagles downed Bellarmine 2-1 in double-overtime on Sunday, Aug. 28. Colgate downed Bryant 2-1 on Friday (Sept. 2) afternoon.

After a scoreless first half, Colgate opened the scoring in the 37th minute when Ella Murphy put the visitors up 1-0.

The Bald Eagles tied the match in the 43rd minute. Constanza Lopez Zabala (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Colegio Martin y Omar) deflected home a hard shot-pass from Ellie Mead (Chesterfield, Va./Cosby (Coker)).
At the end of regulation, the two teams were tied 1-1 and needed overtime.

Just over three minutes into the first overtime frame the Bald Eagles capitalized on their tremendous offensive pressure. Spangenberg pounced on a loose ball and fired it past the Colgate keeper. The play was built upon a scoring chance from Jazmin Palma (Entre Rios Providence Argentina/Colegio Sagrado Corazon de Jesus) who ripped on a shot on cape, but Colgate goalkeeper Anna Unger made a brilliant stop, but the rebound was too much, and Spangenberg seized the opportunity and connected for the winning strike.

Lock Haven outshot Colgate, 16-3 and held an 11-3 advantage in penalty corners.

The win was powered by another all-around team effort. Amy Stevens (Castle Creek, N.Y./Whitney Point) played well throughout and Mead was the leader of the defensive unit that was outstanding.

Lock Haven will return to action next weekend. The Bald Eagles will host a pair of games including a Friday, Sept. 9 match versus Georgetown (3 p.m.) and a Sunday, Sept. 11 game versus Central Michigan (12 p.m.).
