LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven women's soccer team (2-8-1, 2-7-1 PSAC East) broke open a scoreless battle with two goals in the final five minutes, and the late-game heroics lifted the Bald Eagles to a thrilling 2-0 victory over visiting Mansfield (3-7-2, 2-6-2 PSAC East) tonight at home in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division action.
Avery Landrum (Reading, Pa./Muhlenberg) and
Jocey Francis (Camp Hill, Pa./Cedar Cliff) scored for Lock Haven, and goalkeeper
Megan Miller (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) pitched the shutout behind a four-save effort.
The late-game spark from the Lock Haven attack proved to be the difference in the tightly contested match.
The Bald Eagles held an 8-7 advantage in shots, but Mansfield held a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.
With five minutes to play Landrum sent a shot behind Mountie goalkeeper Samantha Merklin for the 1-0 lead. The goal followed some great one-two passing from
Janessa Swartz (Palmyra, Pa./Juniata) and Francis, who were both credited with assists on the play.
With just 33 seconds left, Lock Haven made it 2-0 after Francis scored following a strong run down the right side and crossing-pass from
Evelyn Ciaccia (Levittown, Pa./Pennsbury).
For first-year Lock Haven head coach
Sunny Gelnovatch, the victory was her first at home.
