SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Justice Shoats (Wilkes Barre, Pa./Holy Redeemer) leaped to victory in the long jump and
Matthew Muthler (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) capped a brilliant two-day run in the decathlon with a historic effort as the duo's day-two performances led the way for the Lock Haven men's outdoor track and field team Friday at the 2023 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Outdoor Championships.
Shoats topped the field in the long jump with a remarkable leap of 23-10.75, an NCAA Division II championship qualifying mark. The Bald Eagle rookie bested a championship-field of 20.
Muthler finished second overall in the two-day decathlon with a point-total of 6,325, the fifth-best mark in school history. Muthler capped the two-day, 10-event competition with an 859-point run of 4:13.20 in the 1,500-meter event. The time is the fastest in Division II history for a 1,500-meter run that is part of the decathlon.
Ryan Miller (Bradford, Pa./Bradford) will compete tomorrow in the finals at both 200 and 400 meters. Miller ran 48.38 today in the prelims and qualified second for Saturday's 400-meter finals. He ran 21.72 in the 200m, an outdoor personal-best and a time that just missed Lock Haven's all-time top-five.
The Bald Eagles put on a show at 800 meters.
Morgan Gavitt (Hughesville, Pa./Hughesville) used another huge surge late to run 1:51.85 in the prelims. It's the second-fastest time in Lock Haven history and qualified him second for tomorrow's finals. Gavitt's personal-best run was one of three for The Haven in the event.
Gavin Furey (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport) ran a Haven top-10 time of 1:53.30 and qualified fourth for the finals with a monster personal-best mark.
Andrew Wehrle (Punxsutawney, Pa./ Punxsutawney) just missed the finals, but ran a notable 1:55.39.
Both
Tanner Walter (New Columbia, Pa./Milton) and
Mason Ochs (Oarmont, Pa./Riverview) improved on their seeds, ran personal-best times and scored in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Walter was fourth overall with a time of 9:46.05 and Ochs was eighth in 10:02.41.
Lock Haven will also send
Matt Reinard (Camp Hill, Pa./Cumberland Valley) and
Austin Kravetz (Altoona, Pa./Altoona) to the finals of the 400-meter hurdles after an error in hurdle placement in the prelims will lead to everyone running a timed final Saturday.
The Bald Eagles advanced to Saturday's finals in the 4x100-meter relay, and after two days, The Haven men are fifth in the team standings (24 points).
Tomorrow (Sat., May 13) marks the third and final day of competition at the 2023 PSAC Championships. Action in the field events is set to start at 11 a.m. Saturday. The full 2023 championship schedule, results, live coverage links, photo galleries and more can be found at GoLHU.com.
