SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Dean Coleman-Newsome made a layup as time closed to zero to lift the Lock Haven men's basketball team to a thrilling 68-67 victory over West Virginia Wesleyan on the final day of the Atlantic Region Challenge, hosted by Slippery Rock, on Saturday (Nov. 15).
With the victory, The Haven improves to 1-1, while WVW falls to 0-2.
Trailing 67-66 with 14 seconds to go, Coleman-Newsome went one-on-one straight to the cup and kissed it off the glass for the game-winning basket to propel the Bald Eagles to their first victory of the season.
Luke Kennevan led all scorers with 17 points on 8-of-12 shots from the floor and added a team-high seven rebounds.
Keith Warren finished with 14 points, while
Dyllon Scott led the second unit with 13 points and five rebounds.
Coleman-Newsome and
Blake Deegan both finished with a pair of steals.
In the first half, West Virginia Wesleyan led 12-2 in points-off-turnovers to carry a 41-37 lead into the break.
However, Lock Haven opened the second half on an 8-2 run to take a 43-41 lead with just under 19 minutes to go.
The Haven built its advantage to as much as eight, 62-54, at the 5:57 mark following a trifecta from
Mike Knouse.
However, WVW erupted on a 13-4 run over the ensuing five minutes and a triple gave the Bobcats a 67-66 advantage with just 14 seconds to go.
The Bald Eagles broke through the Bobcats' press, resulting in a WVW foul, allowing The Haven to call a time out and set up an inbound play to go for the win.
A WVW heave at the buzzer hit off the rim and The Haven secured its first victory of the season.
Stephen Ovia led four Bobcats in double figures with 16 points.
