SCRANTON, Pa. – Over the past three days (Nov. 21-23), the Lock Haven swimming team competed in the Electric City Invitational, hosted by Marywood, in Scranton Pennsylvania. The Bald Eagle swimmers won the invitational with a team score of 840 points, narrowing out host Marywood by 41 points.
Other schools that competed were Suny Oneonta (459, T-3rd), Wilkes University (459, T-3rd), Lycoming College (282, 5th), Cedar Crest College (202, 6th), and King's College (71, 7th).
Day One:
The quartet of Nora Craig, Gianna Gruska, Kate MacAlister, and Veronica Karboski opened up their afternoons with a win in the 200-yard medley relay, with a final time of 1:54.82.
Jadyn Oswalt lowered her Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) qualifying mark in the 1,650-yard freestyle, placing first with a time of 18:48.79. Madison Bortner and Craig also achieved personal best of 19:24.94 and 19:44.95, respectively, in the same race, recording second and fourth place.
The Haven ended its impressive day one with another victory in the 200-yard freestyle relay, with a time of 1:44.07, and Karboski gained a PSAC qualifying mark.
Lock Haven led after day one with 192 team points.
Day Two:
Much like day one, day two started hot for The Haven. The Bald Eagles opened up Saturday morning with a sweep in the 500-yard freestyle, with Oswalt (5:25.81), Bortner (5:39.92), and Craig (5:42.97), slating out the top three. Oswalt received another PSAC qualifying mark, and Bortner and Craig both achieved season-bests in the race.
In the 200 IM, Alexis Fraundorfer achieved a season-best time of 2:30.96.
The 50-yard freestyle was also dominated by Lock Haven, with five of the top 10 finishers being the Bald Eagles. Karboski (25.31, 1st), Gruska (25.52, 2nd), Hannah Howell (26.96, 6th), Marisa Gachette (27.11, 7th), and Finley Musser (27.29, 10th) all were top place finishers, with Gruska gaining a PSAC qualifying mark.
Lock Haven ended the afternoon how they started, with another victory. The Haven won the 400-yard medley relay with another outstanding performance from the quartet that won the 200-yard medley relay just the day before, with a time of 4:16.73.
The Haven finished session two with 402 points, still holding on to first place.
In the 100-yard fly, MacAlister achieved a season-best time of 1:01.56, as did Mary Alice-Craig (1:11.12). MacAlister also achieved a PSAC qualifying mark in the 100-yard backstroke with a first-place finish.
Oswalt once again stood out, winning first in the 200-yard freestyle with a season-best time of 2:04.71, and following right behind her was her teammate Bortner, who finished second (2:05.55).
Gruska (1:10.70), Fraundorfer (1:14.06), Karboski (1:15.04), Musser (1:16.83) each achieved season bests in the 100-yard breaststroke.
The Haven also went out on top Saturday evening, with Karboski, Craig, Bortner and Oswalt taking first in the 800-yard relay (8:27.94).
Lock Haven went into Sunday at 642 team points, with Marywood just behind them.
Day Three:
Lock Haven opened Sunday morning with another win, and Craig gained a season-best and first-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:24.89.
The 100-yard freestyle featured another victory for The Haven, with Karboski finishing in first place with a time of 56.49.
Lock Haven rounded out the Invitational with a win in the 400-yard freestyle relay, with Gruska, Howell, Bortner and Karboski leading the charge with a time of 3:49.49.
Lock Haven ended up scoring 840 team points, winning in dominant fashion.
Through just six dual meets this season, the Bald Eagles have an overall 3-3 record, which is the most wins in a season for the program since 2016-17.
