LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University football team (0-1) got a number of tremendous individual efforts and the Bald Eagles had a chance late, but came up just short as visiting Millersville University (1-1) spoiled
John Allen's head coaching debut with a thrilling 21-20 win.
Senior quarterback
Jarryd Burkett (Altoona, Pa./Altoona) passed for 281 yards and two touchdowns. He was 21-for-39 with one interception.
Burkett's solid play sparked a well balanced offensive effort that put up some big numbers.
It marked the first time since 2004 against Clarion that the Bald Eagles had a player rush for over 100 yards and a receiver bring in 100.
Brandon Brader (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) led the way on the ground as he rushed for 119 yards on 20 carries.
Jesse Hoover (Curwensville, Pa./Curwensville) made seven catches for 139 yards and one score.
Senior
Ibrahim Smith (New Bloomfield, Pa./West Perry) made his first career start at linebacker and looked as if he been there his whole career. He made nine tackles, including seven solo stops and two tackles for a loss as he led a defensive unit that was flying all over the field.
Raymond Mosby (Easton, Pa./Wilson) also had nine tackles (8 solo) and an interception for Lock Haven.
Millersville jumped out to a 7-0 lead with 3:17 left in the first period and the Marauders quickly added to that lead with 1:51 left in the first as MU led 14-0.
With 8:24 left in the second quarter
Jay Hartman (Lewiston, Pa./Indian Valley) caught a seven yard pass in the back of the end zone to make it 14-7.
Noah Heimer (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) made one of his two fields goals with 5:55 to go in the first half to the cut the MU lead to four points.
Heimer's 35 yard field goal made it 14-10.
Millersville scored early in the second to make it 21-10.
With 1:41 left in the third, Hoover made a game-changing play. He reeled in a 68 yard pass for a touchdown.
With 11:56 left in the game, Heimer made a 28 yard field goal.
Heimer's field goal capped off the game's scoring as the two defenses held tight to close out the thrilling affair.
The Bald Eagles travel to No. 18 Kutztown University next Saturday, September 17 for a 6 p.m. kickoff with Kutztown University.
