Box Score WINTER PARK, Fla. – The No. 6 Lock Haven University lacrosse team (15-3) fell, 11-10 today to No. 3 Rollins College (16-1) in a thrilling NCAA Quarterfinal matchup at Barker Family Stadium in Winter Park, Fla.
The Lady Eagles trailed 10-5 at the halftime break, but LHU mounted a huge second half comeback that saw The Haven outscore Rollins 5-1 in the second period. Despite the amazing second half, LHU came up just short, falling to the Tars, 11-10.
Both teams came out playing very physical and LHU and RC were clicking offensively early on.
The Haven struck first, just 1:47 into the game when
Jill Murray (Kennett Square, Pa./Unionville) put LHU up 1-0, as she fired a shot off of a free position past the Tars goalie.
Rollins answered quickly however, and the Tars went on a 5-0 run to take a 5-1 lead with 19:10 to play in the opening half.
The two teams alternated goals over the next few minutes of play.
Jessica Pandolf (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North) stopped the 5-0 RC run when she was awarded a free position and dodged her way through the defense to pick up LHU's second goal.
After a Rollins goal,
Hope Thomas (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) darted her way through the Tars defense and scored to cut the Rollins lead to, 6-3.
Rollins went on another offensive run, as the Tars netted the next three goals. With just over 11 minutes to play in the first half, Murray halted the RC run with her second goal of the game, as she tucked a free-position shot into the bottom corner of the goal to make it a, 9-4 game.
Rollins would add their 10th goal of the opening period before Pandolf netted her second goal of the game and final goal of the opening period with 5:42 to play.
The Tars led 10-5 at the halftime break. Caroline Lamere led Rollins with a hat trick in the first half.
The second half began with a defensive struggle, as neither team scored in the first 12 minutes of the period.
LHU broke the scoreless drought with 17:27 to play, when
Kelly Close (West Chester, Pa./Unionville) scored off of a free-position and The Haven followed that up with another goal just minutes later off the stick of senior
Emily Cilla (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park).
Cilla's goal cut the Rollins lead to 10-7 and forced the Tars to call timeout with 15:55 to play.
Out of the timeout, LHU quickly scored. After coming up with the draw control, Cilla netted her second goal of the game, putting LHU within striking distance, down 10-8.
After a Rollins goal,
Chelsea Borrino (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) made it an 11-9 game when she let a free-position shot fly that deflected off the far post and into the back of the net.
Borrino cut the Rollins lead to just one, 11-10 when she netted her second goal of the game with 7:02 to play.
Lock Haven went toe-to-toe with Rollins over the final minutes of the heavyweight bout, but the Lady Eagles were unable to even the score before the end of regulation.
Murray, Cilla, Borrino and Pandolf all netted two goals each for LHU.
Lock Haven's defense was sensational in the second half, as the Lady Eagles allowed just one goal and forced 11 Rollins turnovers in the period.
Christina Hawkins (Harve de Grace, Md./Harve de Grace),
Lindsay Walbrandt (Souderton, Pa./Souderton) and
Melinda Wojt (Telford, Pa./Souderton) were all key in stifling the Tars' explosive offensive attack.
Hawkins led The Haven with four ground balls.
Chrissy Baffuto (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) was solid all game in net for LHU and made eight saves. Baffuto also had four ground balls of her own.
The loss marks the end of an outstanding season for LHU, who finished the season 15-3 overall, and reached the NCAA Tournament for the 6th time in school history.
