ERIE, Pa. – Troy Amspacher (Lancaster, Pa./Conestoga Valley) scored two goals, including the game-winner tonight, as the Lock Haven University men's soccer team (5-5-1, 4-1 PSAC) downed Gannon (4-7, 3-3 PSAC), 4-3 in thrilling overtime fashion.
The Bald Eagles found themselves in an early hole tonight. Gannon's Robbie Bennett scored in just the third minute of the game, giving the Golden Knights an early, 1-0 lead.
LHU answered with a goal of its own in the 29
th minute when freshman
Zach Hommey (Woodsboro, Md./Walkersville) headed home a lob pass from
Asher Klahold to even the score at, 1-1.
It was Hommey's first career goal.
Gannon regained the lead in the 43
rd minute when Bennett found the net for his second goal of the night. The Golden Knights held the, 2-1 lead at the halftime break.
The Bald Eagles struck quick in the second half. Amspacher collected a redirected pass behind the defense in the 46
th minute and beat Gannon's keeper from 10 yards out for his first goal of the game, tying the score at, 2-2.
Twelve minutes later,
Asher Klahold (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) took advantage of a throw-in, launching it past the Gannon defense where
Colt Brackbill (Juniata, Pa./Juniata) collected possession and found himself one-on-one with the Gannon keeper.
Brackbill found the back of the net for his first goal of the year and he gave The Haven its first lead of the game, 3-2.
Gannon was all over Haven keeper
Troy Teresak (Pompton Plains, N.J./DePaul Catholic) in the second half. The Golden Knights fired 19 shots and took 17 corner kicks in the second half, but Teresak rose to the occasion. The freshman made eight saves in the half.
Gannon finally pushed one past Teresak in the 81
st minute off the foot of Ted Martin to even the score at, 3-3 and force overtime.
The Golden Knights continued to apply pressure in overtime, but the Bald Eagle defense held strong, keeping all four GU shots away.
In the 99
th minute, Amspacher collected a pass from
Tyler Sablyak (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West), dribbled to the right drawing the keeper out and found an empty net, sealing the 4-3 win for LHU.
The two goals were Amspacher's fifth and sixth of the season.
Teresek was outstanding on the night, finishing with 13 saves.
The win snapped a four-game losing streak for LHU. The Bald Eagles currently sit in a three-way tie atop the PSAC standings with Mercyhurst and Bloomsburg. All three teams have 12 points.
Lock Haven returns to action next Friday (October 17) when the Bald Eagles travel to California (Pa.) for a PSAC matchup. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
