LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University wrestling team went 1-1 today, as the Bald Eagles made their 2015-16 home debut with a pair of home duals.
Lock Haven opened the day with a 31-9 loss to Purdue, but the Bald Eagles responded with a dominating win over Shippensburg. LHU won nine of 10 bouts in the 39-3 win over the Red Raiders.
Trailing Purdue 28-0 after seven bouts, Lock Haven got the board with back-to-back wins at 184 and 197 pounds, thanks to
Tristan Sponseller (East Berlin, Pa./Bermudian Springs) and
Phil Sprenkle (Seven Valleys, Pa./Dallastown).
Sponseller came back in his match at 184 to win 8-6 over Purdue's Tanner Lynde and Sprenkle pinned Drake Stein (3:13). Sprenkle led 5-0 after one period and started the second down – before scoring a reversal and the quick pin.
In the 39-3 win over Shippensburg, the Bald Eagles won nine of 10 bouts and got bonus points from
Bobby Rehm (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor),
Joe Ghione (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial),
Tyler Wood (West Chester, Pa./West Chester-Rustin), Sponseller and
Brad Emerick (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Coughlin).
Rehm scored a tech fall at 133, while Ghione (141) and Wood (174) both picked up pins.
Sponseller, who was 2-0 on the day won by forfeit in the win over Shippensburg, and Emerick closed out the match with a 9-1 major decision at 285.
David Sheesely (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg),
Kyle Hammond (Nottingham, Pa./Solanco),
Aaron McKinney (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny) and
Cody Cordes (Edwardsville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) were also victorious by decision for The Haven.
The Bald Eagles are now 2-4 on the season.
Prior to the LHU – Purdue match, Purdue beat Shippensburg 35-5. The Boilermakers were 2-0 on the day, moving to 5-1 on the season. Shippensburg falls to 1-3 overall.
