DENVER – In what proved to be the Bald Eagles toughest test thus far in 2016, the No. 8 Lock Haven University lacrosse team (4-0) remained perfect and improved to 4-0 with a hard-fought 9-8 win over No. 18 Regis University (4-1).
With LHU trailing late,
Dana Laulis (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) scored two goals just over a minute apart, capping a three-goal Haven run to put the Bald Eagles up 9-7 with 9:34 left in the game.
The late surge was the difference in the battle of two of the nation's top NCAA Division II programs.
Rachel Engler (Perkiomenville, Pa./Rutgers) had another big game and finished with three goals, as did Laulis.
Ashley Gochenaur (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) scored twice and
Jenna Dingler (Turnersville, N.J./Washington Township) added one goal.
Kelly Close (Kennett Square, Pa./Unionville) led a strong defensive effort for Lock Haven and goalkeeper
Hannah Houde (Jackson, N.J./Slippery Rock Univ.) made nine saves, all of which proved to be a huge factor in the final outcome.
Regis led 6-5 at halftime, but once again Lock Haven used a sensational second-half effort to earn the Bald Eagles fourth victory in as many games.
Lock Haven opens Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play on Thursday, March 17 at Kutztown (4 p.m.). The Bald Eagles home-opener is set for Saturday, March 19 at 1 p.m. vs. No. 15 Seton Hill.
