LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. – Tamia Roach (Petit Valley, Trinidad and Tobago/St. Joseph's Convent Port-of-Spain) scored twice in a six-round shootout and the Lock Haven University field hockey team (10-7) outlasted host Rider University (8-9) 1-0 today in non-conference action as the Bald Eagles held a 2-1 advantage in the shootout.
The win pushed LHU to 10-7 on the season and helped secure Lock Haven's sixth straight winning season. The Bald Eagles have now recorded 10 or more wins for 29 straight seasons.
After 70 minutes of regulation play and two 15-minute overtime periods, Lock Haven and Rider – two former Northeast Conference (NEC) rivals - were deadlocked at 0-0.
Prior to the thrilling shootout, Lock Haven had outshot Rider 24-9.
With the two teams tied after 100 minutes, they moved to a five-round shootout. Roach opened the shootout with a goal to give Lock Haven an advantage, but the next eight shooters went a combined 0 for 8 before Rider drew even on its final attempt. After five rounds, the shootout was tied 1-1 and moved into a sudden-victory format.
After Rider shot first and came away empty in the sixth round, Roach got her chance to play hero and did just that, converting for a second time. This time the goal was the difference and gave Lock Haven the win.
Paige Stuppy (Jonestown, Pa./Northern Lebanon) was strong throughout the marathon game. She finished with six saves including one with 26 seconds left in double-overtime after Rider created a solid scoring chance off a penalty corner in the final minute of the second OT period.
The Bald Eagles will close their 2017 season Sunday, Oct. 29 with an Atlantic 10 Conference (A-10) match at Saint Francis (2 p.m.).
