LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University volleyball team (11-18, 4-13 PSAC) dropped a nail biter at home to Shippensburg (20-10, 12-5 PSAC) 3-2 (14-25, 25-19, 25-17, 29-31, 15-8) in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action.
The Bald Eagles came out and made a statement early by capitalizing on Ship errors throughout the first set. This allowed LHU to run away with the first set and win it 25-14.
Once the second set came around, the Raiders had settled in and began to minimize their mistakes. That allowed Shippensburg to take the second and third sets and take the match lead 2-1.
In the fourth set, the Haven faced a five point deficit and Ship had momentum, but the Bald Eagles were able to stifle that momentum and nine of the next 11 points to pull ahead. The Raiders were able to tie the game 24 before the teams began to exchange highlight plays. In the end, LHU was able to hold on in the thrilling fourth set to knot the match at two sets apiece.
In the decisive fifth set, Shippensburg got off to a fast start and the Bald Eagle couldn't quite recover as Ship was able to win the set and outlast Lock Haven.
Shaye Whiteman (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) was the star of the night for The Haven as she broke the LHU single season record for digs. Whiteman entered needing just eight digs to set the record, and midway through the second set, she did just that.
The Lock Haven offense was led by a strong showing from
Veronica Morrison (Sugar Run, Pa./Wyalusing Valley) as she tallied 14 kills.
Gabrielle Stick (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township) and
Annie Dombrowski (Altoona, Pa./Bishop Guilfoyle) followed Morrison with nine and eight kills respectively.
