Setting the stage:
For the first time in 2017, the Lock Haven University football team will play a home game and it's a fitting home-opener as Saturday's (September 23) game with West Chester University marks Homecoming 2017 in The Haven.
Kickoff on Saturday at Hubert Jack Stadium is set for 2 p.m.
The Bald Eagles enter the game looking for their first win of 2017 and sit at 0-3. West Chester, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East preseason favorite is 2-1 overall. Saturday's game is the PSAC East opener for both teams.
Last week, Lock Haven fell to nationally-ranked Slippery Rock University, 33-7. West Chester is coming off a dominating 62-28 victory at home vs. Edinboro.
Haven hits:
- All-American Trent Fielding (OL, RG/C) has made 35 career starts which ranks among the top-three players in the PSAC.
- LHU head coach Dave Taynor (Urbana, '99) is in his third season as head coach at LHU (3rd season (6-19 at LHU), 10th overall (43-59).
- Last season, LHU went 4-7 with two of those four wins coming at home.
- Last week at Slippery Rock, R-Jr. QB Jimmy Strickland made his first career start.
- Last week, the Bald Eagles used a two-QB system as true-freshman Kyle Knight also saw significant time. He rushed for 104 yards.
- Knight's 104 yards on the ground marked LHU's first 100-yard+ rushing performance of the season.
- RB John Ford (Jr.) scored LHU's first TD of the season last week vs. SRU.
- As a team, the Bald Eagles rank No. 4 in the PSAC in interceptions with 5.
- DB Isaiah Flamer (R-Jr.) leads LHU with 35 tackles (No. 4 in the PSAC). He also ranks No. 4 in the PSAC with 11.7 tackles/game.
The series with West Chester:
- Saturday marks the 30th all-time meeting between Lock Haven and West Chester
- LHU is 6-22-1 all-time vs. the Golden Rams
- First meeting: 1931: Lock Haven, W, 26-0
- Last season: West Chester, W, 37-7
- Streak: West Chester, W, 6
- Last LHU victory: 1991, 13-7
Homecoming winning streak:
Lock Haven was won three straight Homecoming games. Last season LHU beat Millersville 29-17. In 2015, Lock Haven celebrated Homecoming with a 56-20 win over Cheyney and in 2014, the Bald Eagles downed Millersville 17-10. West Chester was the last team to spoil LHU's Homecoming, winning at Lock Haven in 2013.
2017 LHU Gridiron Greats:
As part of the LHU football team's 2017 Homecoming celebration, the Bald Eagles will honor their 2017 Gridiron Great class. The group includes Robert "Tommy" Thompson ('68), Dave Laudeman ('90), Bill Peterson ('86), Jim Dressler ('80), current assistant coach
Terry Szucs ('75), and the undefeated and conference champion 1957 team.
2017 Homecoming Honorary Captains:
In traditional fashion, the Bald Eagles will feature honorary captains Saturday who are former players and alumni. Saturday's honorary captains include George Dintiman ('58), Bob Narducci ('86), Peter Gulick, Stan Allen ('87) and Bill Peterson ('86).
Bald Eagle Alumni Zone:
- New in 2017 - the Bald Eagle Alumni Zone – established to comply with PSAC and NCAA Championship guidelines, and to ensure the safety of players and team personnel, LHU alumni will no longer be allowed on the sideline during games.
- The Bald Eagle Alumni Zone will be under the Herrmann Pavilion located just inside the fence on the scoreboard side of the field beyond the end zone/track.
- Alumni wishing to watch the game from field level will be asked to stay within the Pavilion and will not be allowed on the sidelines or track during the game.
- No alcoholic beverages will be permitted in the Bald Eagle Alumni Zone.
