LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Alyscia Smith (Newport, Pa./Newport) recorded a hat trick to spark a big offensive outing from the Bald Eagles and the Lock Haven University field hockey team (8-6, 2-3 A-10) soared by visiting Saint Louis (3-10, 1-5 A-10), 5-0, today at home on Charlotte Smith Field in Atlantic 10 Conference (A-10) action.
Smith's hat trick pushed her to 12 goals on the season, which leads the team.
Tamia Roach (Petit Valley, Trinidad and Tobago/St. Joseph's Convent Port-of-Spain) opened the scoring in the ninth minute and
Prabhneet Basra (Surrey, British Columbia/Sullivan Heights) capped the scoring in the 69
th minute of play.
Starting goalkeeper
Brianna DeAngelis (Doylestown, Pa./Monmouth) was called upon to make just one save in the opening half, as she split time with newcomer
Joaquina Orlandini (Concordia, Argentina/San Antonio School), who played in goal in the second half. The Bald Eagles outstanding defensive unit allowed just one shot in 70 minutes, as it was all Lock Haven today from the opening whistle.
Standout-defender
Tia Judy (East Prospect, Pa./Homeschooled) was credited with two assists, and both
Kayla Brathwaite (Arouca, Trinidad and Tobago/Bishop Anesty East) and Roach picked up one.
Roach put Lock Haven up, 1-0, 8:27 into the game off a direct penalty corner pass from Judy. It was 2-0 LHU in the 18
th minute, as the Bald Eagles connected on another corner play. This time, Smith ripped home a shot, marking the first of her three goals in the game.
Smith pushed the Bald Eagles first-half lead to 3-0 with her second of the game in the 33
rd minute. She ran onto a perfect long pass from Brathwaite, before cutting past the goalkeeper, and tucking the ball home. LHU led 3-0 at halftime.
Smith recorded the hat trick in the 51
st minute and made it 4-0, before Basra scored her first goal of the year on a backhand shot to the first post with 1:14 left in the game.
The Bald Eagles will now hit the road for a pair of A-10 games in Virginia. On Friday, October 19, LHU will play at Virginia Commonwealth (3 p.m.), before playing at Richmond on Sunday, October 21 (12 p.m.).
