Lock Haven rallies, knocks off Concord in season opener

The Lock Haven women’s basketball team was able to rally from a 14-point second half deficit to knock off Concord in the team’s season opener.

FAIRMONT, W. Va. – The Lock Haven University women's basketball team (1-0) was able to rally from a 14-point, second half deficit as the Bald Eagles outscored Concord University (0-1) 39-25 in the second half as LHU knocked off the Mountain Lions 73-66 in the team's 2018-19 season opener Friday afternoon.
                        
The win was the first in a season opener since the 2015-16 season for the Haven when they knocked off Davis & Elkins, 65-60.
 
Lock Haven and Concord played a game of runs in the first half as LHU was able to jump out to an early lead as they led 19-15 after the first quarter. In the second quarter, the Mountain Lions were able to outscore the Bald Eagles 26-15 and took a 41-34 lead into halftime.
                                         
The second half turned out to be all Lock Haven.
 
The Haven forced Concord into 12 second half turnovers and held the Mountain Lions to 26.3% (10-38) shooting as LHU roared all the way back from a 53-39 third quarter deficit to get the win and move to 1-0 on the young season.
 
Offensively, senior Jalyn Shelton-Burleigh (State College, Pa./State College) carried the load for LHU. Shelton-Burleigh scored a team high 18 points on an efficient 7-11 from the field and 3-6 from the three-point line.
 
Freshmen Taylor Leidy (Alexandria, Pa./Juniata Valley) and Nadia Romanchock (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) both had big games in their Lock Haven debuts. Leidy scored 13 points for Bald Eagles to go with seven rebounds, five assists and two steals while Romanchock finished with eight points, seven rebounds, five assists and two steals.
 
Overall, LHU forced Concord into 20 turnovers for the game and totaled 11 steals as the Bald Eagles did all they could to smother the Mountain Lions and shrink the passing lanes.
 
Bink Redman (York, Pa/William Penn) led the Haven with three steals while Leidy, Romanchock and Rileigh Devine (Etters, Pa./Red Land) all tallied two apiece.

The Bald Eagles will return to the court tomorrow (Saturday, November 10) when they take on Fairmont State. That game is set for a 4:00 PM tip.
