MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Lock Haven University softball team (1-1) opened up the 2018 season with an 8-2 victory over Georgian Court University (1-1) and fell to Molloy University (2-0) in a thrilling extra inning matchup.
In the contest against Georgian Court, The Haven scored eight runs on eight hits to capture the victory which gave Lock Haven its first win of the early season.
LHU jumped out to the 1-0 lead in the third inning after
Casey Carpenter (Spring Brook, Pa./North Pocono) singled to left-center and
Moriah Lindsey (Woolrich, Pa./Central Mountain) raced home from second to score. After Georgian Court answered with a run of its own,
Elizabeth Linn (Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte) got on base after an error by the second baseman that also resulted in
Amanda Loar (Barto, Pa./Boyertown Senior) scoring and retaking the lead (2-1).
The Haven then pulled away in the fifth inning as they scored a total of three runs to push the lead to 5-2.
Chloe Kennedy (Elkton, MD./Caravel Academy) and Linn both hit doubles that plated two and one run respectively.
Caputo capped the scoring in the seventh inning when she sent the ball clear over the center field fence for a three-run shot, and gave Lock Haven the 8-2 lead which would hold for the final score.
Caputo also took the mound as the starting pitcher where she went 4 2/3 innings giving up one earned run and struck out one.
Taryn Williams (Maplewood, N.J./Columbia) then finished out the final 2 1/3 innings allowing two hits, striking out three and not allowing a run.
In the day's early action, the Bald Eagles fell in a thrilling extra-inning contest. Molloy jumped out to the early three run lead before LHU scored its first run of the season when
Becca Caputo (Williamsport, Pa./Jersey Shore) launched a solo home run to left field to cut into the lead.
The Lions would strike again in the top of the fifth as they plated two more runs, however the Bald Eagles responded in the bottom half of the inning when Lindsey singled to left field which plated Loar and cut the lead to 5-2.
The seventh inning was a wild one as Lock Haven was down to its last out with a runner on first base.
Faith Ceely (Troy, Pa./Troy) started the rally when she reached on an error by the second baseman that resulted in Kennedy scoring. Caputo then again sparked The Haven as she singled to center field that scored both Ceely and Loar to tie the game 5-5 and force extra innings.
Molloy would score two runs in the top of the 8
th to secure the 7-5 victory.
Kayla Gee (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock) pitched all eight innings as she struck out seven batters while scattering four earned runs on 10 hits. Caputo went 3-4 from the plate as she drove in three runs and accounted for another run.
Lindsey and Caputo started the season off with a bang as both are hitting over .500 through the first two games. Lindsey went 4-7 at the plate while accounting for two runs and driving in one. Caputo went 4-8 with the bat as she hit two home runs and totaled six RBIs. She also picked up a win in the circle.
The Bald Eagles will hit the field again tomorrow for day two of the Snowbird Freeze Out when The Haven takes on Merrimack at 10 a.m. and Le Moyne at 12 p.m.
