LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University field hockey team (6-5) and visiting Rider University (5-5) locked up in a non-conference thriller today and in the end, the visiting Broncs came away with a 1-0 win after they outlasted the Bald Eagles in a game that eventually was decided in a seven-round shootout.
Despite an overall 24-5 advantage in shots for the game, Rider slipped by host-LHU after securing a 2-1 advantage in the seven-round shootout. It marked the second straight season where the two former Northeast Conference (NEC) rivals needed a shootout to decide the outcome. Last season, at Rider, LHU won 1-0.
Today, the two teams were deadlocked 0-0 at the end of regulation and they remained scoreless after two 10-minute overtime periods, setting things up for the dramatic shootout.
After making her debut on Friday, freshman goalkeeper
Joaquina Orlandini (Concordia, Argentina/San Antonio School) entered the game today at the end of regulation for the shootout. She made a huge impact as she made five stops in the shootout including four in the first round of five shooters. On Friday, vs nationally-ranked Saint Joseph's, Orlandini made two saves in the final 20-plus minutes of the game, marking her official LHU debut.
As the shootout went to a sixth round, neither team could convert with the win on the line. Shooting first in the seventh round, Rider was awarded a stroke and the Broncs converted. Lock Haven did not score on its final attempt, as Rider squeaked out the road-win.
LHU starting goalkeeper
Brianna DeAngelis (Doylestown, Pa./Monmouth) made one save in 90 minutes as the Bald Eagles defense was nothing short of sensational in front of her.
Taylor Plouse (Middletown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) led the defensive charge, as she - among a cast of others - played tough.
For DeAngelis, it was her fourth shutout of the season.
MacKenzie Farley (East Berlin, Pa./Bermudian Springs) also turned in a strong game for Lock Haven, and the talented and speedy
Kayla Brathwaite (Arouca, Trinidad and Tobago/Bishop Anesty East) was all over the field for The Haven. Brathwaite played well on defense and created several scoring chances.
Tamia Roach (Petit Valley, Trinidad and Tobago/St. Joseph's Convent Port-of-Spain), who scored the Bald Eagles' lone goal in the shootout, finished the game with seven shots including three on target.
Alyscia Smith (Newport, Pa./Newport) had a game-high nine shots.
Rider's road to victory was paved by goalkeeper Lena Vandam, who made 12 saves including several right on the doorstep.
The Bald Eagles will return to action on Friday, October 5 with a 5:30 p.m. Atlantic 10 Conference (A-10) contest at Davidson College.
