Field Hockey cruises to conference win over Richmond

The LHU field hockey team won in dominating 3-0 fashion today over visiting A-10 foe Richmond.

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University field hockey team (4-7, 2-3 A-10) rolled to a 3-0 win over Richmond University (4-10, 3-2 A-10) in Atlantic 10 (A-10) conference action on Friday afternoon at Charlotte E. Smith Field.

After a stalemate in the opening quarter, Martina Spangenberg (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Piaget) gave the Bald Eagles the 1-0 advantage just a minute inside the second period. Spangenberg picked up the ball just inside the Spider-half, took off on a solo run and slapped the ball past the Richmond keeper for the opening goal of the game and her fifth on the season.

Halfway through the second quarter with LHU holding a tense 1-0 lead, Zhao Rodrigo (Valencia, Spain/Colegio San Bartoleme) made a crucial defensive save to preserve the Lock Haven advantage.

Jasmine Miller (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) gave The Haven an insurance goal early in the fourth period as she tipped home an assist from Amy Stevens (Castle Creek, N.Y./Whitney Point), for her third goal on the year, on one of two penalty corners that the Bald Eagles earned all game.

With under a minute to play, and the Bald Eagles cruising to victory, Alyssa Endrick (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks South) claimed her first career goal for LHU on an assist from Miller to push the Lock Haven advantage to 3-0.

The Bald Eagle defense stood strong today as Joaquina Orlandini (Concordia, Argentina/San Antonio School) made seven big saves including a fine split save on one of the 12 Richmond penalty corners.

The Haven defensive unit shined in their first shutout of the year and the backline of Billie Jo Bollinger (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central), Karina Long (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin), Morgan Becker (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin) and Rodrigo made play after play to preserve the Lock Haven lead as the Spiders held most of the possession and a 14-6 overall advantage in shots.

The Bald Eagles close their two-game weekend on Sunday (Oct. 17) when they host non-conference opponent Sacred Heart. That game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start time.
