Field Hockey caps weekend with 2-0 victory over Sacred Heart

The LHU field hockey team knocked off visiting Sacred Heart today in non-conference action.

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University field hockey team (5-7) downed visiting Sacred Heart University (2-11), 2-0, in a non-conference matchup on a rainy Sunday afternoon at Charlotte E. Smith Field.

After a scoreless first period in which Joaquina Orlandini (Concordi, Argentina/San Antonio School) made two saves to keep LHU level, Jasmine Miller (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) got on the end of deflected Pioneer back pass and slapped the ball home for her sixth goal of the year to give LHU the 1-0 advantage with just under ten minutes to play before halftime.

The Bald Eagles struck again with three minutes left in the third quarter when Martina Spangenberg (Buenos Aries, Argentina/Piaget) took a pass from Constanza Lopez Zabala (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Colegio Martin y Omar) and sent a looping shot over the goalkeeper's head to push the Lock Haven lead to 2-0. Spangenberg's goal tied her with Miller for the team-high with six each.

Orlandini and the LHU defense of Morgan Becker (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin), Karina Long (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin), Billie Jo Bollinger (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central) and Zhao Rodrigo (Valencia, Spain/Colegio San Bartoleme) stifled the Pioneer attack, limiting the Sacred Heart attack to just six shots.

The Lock Haven defensive effort scored their second shutout of the weekend and defended five penalty corners as Orlandini was forced into making only three saves on the day.

The Bald Eagles continue their regular season-ending four-game homestand next weekend when they host Davidson on Sunday, October 24. That A-10 battle is set for a noon start time.
