Volleyball falls in Frostburg Tri-Match

The LHU volleyball team dropped matches against Frostburg State and Pitt-Johnstown today.

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Lock Haven University volleyball team (2-8) dropped a pair of matches at the Frostburg State Tri-Match against the host Frostburg State and fellow Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) member Pitt-Johnstown Saturday (Sept. 18) in Maryland.
 
Game 1: L, 2-3 (25-21, 25-19, 25-20, 28-26 & 16-14)
 
The Bald Eagles fell just short in their morning match, which turned out to be a five-set thriller. After dropping the opening set, LHU fought back to take the next two sets and grabbed a 2-1 advantage. Frostburg State, however, scraped out two close wins in the fourth and fifth to grab the 3-2 win.
 
Gabriela Fialova (Ledec nad Sazavou, Czech Republic/ (Indian River)) and Kelly Gaston (Centennial, Colo./Grandview) were the focal points for The Haven attack as Fialova smashed a match-high 21 kills, two service aces and added 17 digs, defensively. Gaston also set a game-high mark handing out 44 assists, three aces of her own and 10 digs.
 
Regan Happ (Lighthouse Point, Fla./Westminster Academy) led all players with 19 digs and Grace Hugar (Clarence, Pa./Bald Eagle) turned in a strong performance notching 14 kills and 14 digs in the match.
 
Game 2: L, 0-3 (25-15, 25-22 & 25-17)
 
The Haven dropped straight sets to PSAC foe Pitt-Johnstown as the Mountain Cats jumped out early and often to sweep the Bald Eagles.
 
Gaston was strong again for LHU with a match-best 27 assists and she also grabbed five digs. Hugar led the Bald Eagles in kills registering 10 kills to go along with nine digs.
 
Happ led the LHU defensive effort again notching 11 digs. Fialova was second-best for LHU in kills tallying seven.

The Bald Eagles open conference play in their next outing against Bloomsburg on Friday, September 24. LHU will travel to Bloomsburg in a 7 p.m. start.
