Men’s Basketball Erupts With 48 Second Half Points to Defeat West Virginia Wesleyan

The Lock Haven men’s basketball team brought home the win on Saturday afternoon as the Bald Eagles went two for two at the Pitt-Johnstown Tipoff Classic.

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. - The Lock Haven men's basketball team (2-0) competed in their second match at the Pitt-Johnstown Tipoff Classic, and the Bald Eagles defeated West Virginia Wesleyan (0-2), 79-57, to sweep both of their matches at the weekend tournament.

Lock Haven defeated Charleston yesterday, 66-63, as LHU starts 2-0 for their third straight season.

The first twenty minutes saw seven lead changes as the Bald Eagles and the Bobcats were locked in a physical contest on both sides of the court. The Bobcats were able to build an early lead, planting a 16-8 lead with ten minutes left in the first.

LHU pushed out a 21-7 run over the next nine minutes to end the half with the Bald Eagles leading, 31-26. Justice Shoats (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Holy Redeemer) paced the offense during the attack, dropping ten points himself.

The Bald Eagles turned on the jets to start the second half, scoring ten points right out of the break to push ahead.

Lock Haven gained a 53-41 lead out of halftime and never allowed the opponent to get any closer on the scoreboard, starting a 21-8 run over the next eight minutes, to help limit any chance of a comeback and secure the 79-57 victory.

Lock Haven's offense exploded for 48 points in the second half, shooting 63.6% from the field, 62.5% from the arc, and 83.3% from the charity stripe.

Three players saw double figures with Shoats scoring 18, Dymir Montague (Philadelphia, Pa./Neumann-Goretti) with 13, and Isaiah Stewart (Madison, Wis./Madison La Follette) with 12. The team also combined for 13 steals, with Montague picking up five and Shoats and Stewart claiming three.
