LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University softball team (15-16, 4-8 PSAC East) earned a split with the regionally-ranked Shippensburg Raiders (25-15, 6-4 PSAC East) today in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) clash.
Game 1: W, Lock Haven 5, Shippensburg 2
In an important PSAC Eastern division dual, the Bald Eagles picked up the 5-2 victory over the visiting Shippensburg Raiders.
The Raiders plated two runs in the top of third inning before Lock Haven could respond with three of its own in the bottom half of the inning. Amanda Criss (Bel Air, Md./ Bel Air) reached on an error before advancing to third on a wild pitch and subsequent ground out. Delaney Good (Mifflinburg, Pa./ Mifflinburg) took a pitch to the thigh as she advanced to first. Yet another wild pitch allowed both runners to advance, and Criss to score.
After Riley McClellan (Granville Summit, Pa./ Troy) reached, both remaining runners scored on a Summer Peters (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) double through the left side as Lock Haven took the 3-2 advantage. LHU added two insurance scores in the fourth, on a Criss RBI triple, before she scored on yet another ball past the catcher.
Criss extended her six-game hit streak in today's game one as she has hits in eight of her last 12 at-bats.
Ace pitcher Madison Waltman (Turbotville, Pa./ Warrior Run) pitched the complete game for The Haven as she added her tenth win of the year, fanning six batters and surrendering just two earned runs.
Game 2: L, Shippensburg 6, Lock Haven 3
The Raiders came out scoring in game two as the Shippensburg contingent plated six runs in six innings despite the Bald Eagles stranding 13 Raider runners on base.
Back-to-back doubles for the Bald Eagles in the bottom of the sixth brough the Bald Eagles within four but ultimately Shippensburg's Emma Flattery was able to shut Lock Haven down over the rest of the game.
LHU tried to rally in the final frame as Criss collected an RBI single, extending her hit streak to seven games. Ultimately the Bald Eagles' efforts were not enough to overcome the deficit.
Shippensburg earned the 6-3 victory behind the arm of Flattery who struck out five batters and scattered 14 flyballs.
