Field Hockey battles No. 13 Saint Joseph’s in A-10 action

The Lock Haven field hockey team and No. 13 Saint Joseph’s locked up in a high-scoring A-10 battle this afternoon at Charlotte Smith Field.

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven field hockey team (2-6, 0-2 A-10) and No. 13 Saint Joseph's (7-2, 2-0 A-10) combined for eight goals this afternoon, but in the end, the visiting Hawks downed the host Bald Eagles, 5-3, in a high scoring Atlantic 10 Conference (A-10) match on Charlotte Smith Field.

Gracyn Catalano (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg), Elien Bos (Eelde, Netherlands/CSG Augustinus College) and Constanza Lopez Zabala (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Colegio Martin y Omar) scored for The Haven.

Nationally-ranked Saint Joseph's scored three goals in the opening quarter, but an early second quarter goal got Lock Haven back in the game.

Catalano knocked in a long rebound for The Haven goal.

The visitors added two more goals and led 5-1, but again Lock Haven responded.

Late in the third quarter, Boss scored to make it 5-2. Anna May Barbusca (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) was credited with the assist.

The Bald Eagle rally continued and Lopez Zabala redirected home a Brooke Hofsass (Hershey, Pa./Lower Dauphin) shot to make it 5-3 with just under 10 minutes to play.

Hofsass' assist highlighted an all-around strong effort for the Bald Eagles. Preseason All-Conference selection Martina Spangenberg (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Piaget) made her 2023 season debut and quickly impacted the game.

Goalkeeper Kelsey Felix (Hallam, Pa./Eastern York) finished with six saves as she did all she could to keep the Bald Eagles in the game.

Today marked the official start of the Lock Haven's 2023 Homecoming Weekend and prior to the game today, Lock Haven honored legendary coach Pat Rudy.

On August 7, Coach Rudy announced her retirement. The announcement followed Rudy's remarkable 45-year head coaching career, which included 27 seasons as the head field hockey coach at The Haven, her alma mater ('77). Rudy was just the third head coach in team history since the founding of the Lock Haven field hockey program in 1945. She followed in the footsteps of fellow legends - Charlotte Smith (1945-72) and Sharon Taylor (1973-95).

Coach Rudy was inducted into the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) National Hall of Fame as part of the organization's Class of 2017. Entering the 2023 season, Rudy's 634 career victories stood as the fifth-most in the history of collegiate field hockey.
