INDIANA, Pa. – The Lock Haven lacrosse team jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first quarter and fought off a late Indiana (Pa.) comeback attempt to secure a 13-12 victory on the road in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action on Wednesday afternoon.
With the victory, the Bald Eagles improve to 5-4 overall and 2-1 in the PSAC Western Division. IUP falls to 3-8 on the season and 1-3 in the conference.
Lock Haven jumped out to a 5-0 advantage through the opening 10 minutes thanks to a pair of goals from
Emma Williams and
Gabby Gunnip and a score by
Hadley Munn.
IUP scored for the first time at the 2:22 mark in the first period, but
Makayla Kelly connected for the equalizer to open the second period to put Lock Haven on top 5-1.
However, following a weather delay, the Crimson Hawks scored six straight goals to take their first lead of the game, 7-6, with eight minutes to go in the first half.
Lock Haven responded with back-to-back goals by Munn and
Nadia Baskot to retake the lead, but IUP countered with two straight scores to go back on top 9-8.
The Haven regained the momentum to end the third and start the fourth and scored four of the game's next five goals to build a 12-10 advantage with just over eight minutes remaining in the game.
IUP scored twice over the final seven minutes of play, but a goal by
Kaitlyn Collins in closing time proved to be the difference and the Bald Eagles held on for a 13-12 conference win.
Gretchen King earned her fifth goalkeeper victory for The Haven as she finished with a game-high 16 saves.
Munn, Gunnip and Williams all finished with a hat-trick, while Collins (2), Baskot and Kelly also scored.
Four different Bald Eagles caused turnovers, while Baskot and
Maggie Milkowich combined for seven ground balls.
Gunnip and Kelly both secured three draw controls.
