Softball picks up wins over Concord and King on Saturday

The Bald Eagles went 2-0 on Saturday after downing Concord and King (Tenn.) in non-conference action

ATHENS, W.Va. - The Lock Haven softball team had a 2-0 Saturday in West Virginia after taking down Concord, 10-3, and King (Tenn.), 3-0, in a non-conference doubleheader.
 
With the sweep, The Haven improved to 3-1 on the young season.

Lock Haven erased a three-run deficit with a seven-inning surge to down Concord 10-3 in the opening game of the day.
 
The Bald Eagles trailed after Concord plated three runs in the second inning, but Lock Haven answered with a three-run fourth, three more in the sixth and a four-run seventh to pull away decisively.
 
Evelyn Osborne delivered the decisive blow in the seventh, a three-run home run to left field that broke the game open at 10-2.
 
Maci Brodzina was equally productive from the three-hole, going 2-for-3 with two walks and three RBIs, including a two-run single up the middle in the fourth that gave Lock Haven its first lead.
 
Gianna Goodman finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a stolen base, while Blaire Balestrini contributed two hits and a run-scoring single in the fourth.
 
Starting pitcher Talia Ross earned the win, tossing six innings and striking out 11. Marissa Horn closed out the seventh, retiring three of four batters faced.

Lock Haven handed King (Tenn.) a 3-0 defeat behind timely and a combined shutout from Faith Persing and Keiva Middleton.  
 
Persing set the tone early, working four innings and surrendering just three hits while striking out two.
 
King loaded the bases with two outs in the fourth - but Persing induced three consecutive flyouts to escape unscathed.
 
Middleton took over in the fifth and closed out the final three innings without allowing a run, earning the save on 33 pitches.
 
The Lock Haven offense did the rest by manufacturing runs in three straight innings.
 
Abby Robertson scored in the second off a base hit from Goodman, before picking up her own RBI in the top of the third.  
 
Madison Melius led off the fourth with a solo home run down the left-field line to round out the scoring.
 
Goodman was the offensive catalyst, going 2-for-3 with an RBI single in the second inning that opened the scoring.
 
King managed only three hits across seven innings and left five runners on base.
 
 
Next up for The Haven:
The Bald Eagles travel to Greeneville, Tennessee on Friday, March 6 for a non-conference doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. vs. Tusculum.
