Bald Eagles downed by #20 Illinois; Hyatt & Khoury win for Lock Haven

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – (2/12/11) The Lock Haven University wrestling team was downed 34-7 tonight by No. 20 Illinois in a non-conference dual.

With the loss, the Bald Eagles slip to 5-11 on the year.

The Illini, who lost to No. 3 Penn State 23-13 last night in Happy Valley improve to 5-5-1.

The Bald Eagles got a pair of the wins tonight in a match were Illinois got bonus points in six of its eight wins.

Nick Hyatt (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) and Mike Khoury (Edgewater, N.J./Saint Joseph Regional) picked up Lock Haven's wins.

Hyatt was fired up at the start of his 125-pound bout and earned an early takedown to set the tone for his major decision win over Logan Arilis. Hyatt led 2-0 after one period and quickly racked up valuable riding time.

With just 15 seconds left in the third period, Hyatt earned a takedown and quickly tacked on two back points, leading to the 10-2 major.

The Illini featured a trio of wrestlers ranked in the top-13 nationally from 133 to 149 and they took advantage as Illinois got bonus points by way of a pin, tech fall and major.

Khoury earned a hard-fought win at 174 as he needed extra time to take down Dan Stelter.

After seven minutes of action the two were deadlocked at 1-1. They were still scoreless after one overtime period and Khoury was able to ride Steltler out for 30 seconds in the second overtime.

Khoury brought the Thomas Fieldouse crowd to its feet with a quick escape in the third overtime. After earning the escape with 26 seconds left, Khoury nearly scored a takedown and hung on for the 2-1 win.

Bald Eagles earn NCAA DI Coaches'/RPI National Rankings

Several Bald Eagles earned national rankings in the most recent edition of the NCAA DI Coaches' Panel Rankings and in the first Rating Percentage Index (RPI).

Nick Hyatt, John Trumbetti, and Matt Bonson were all ranked in the second of three coaches' panel rankings.

Bonson led the way as he sits at No. 21 at 141 in the coaches' poll. Hyatt (125) is No. 33 and Trumbetti (133) is No. 30.

Four different Bald Eagles were ranked in the RPI.

Along with Hyatt and Bonson, Mike Khoury and Harry Turner both earned a spot in the top-33 of the RPI.

Bonson was ranked No. 11. Hyatt is No. 32 and Khoury is No. 28, while Turner comes in at No. 32.

The final coaches' rankings and RPI will be two of the tools used as part of the selection process to determine the qualifiers for the 2011 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships.

The coaches' rankings are compiled by a vote of coaches across the nation. Each qualifying tournament has five coaches rank the top 33 wrestlers in two weight classes. For ranking purposes, coaches must select a wrestler as a starter at a designated weight class. In addition, coaches may only select one wrestler per weight class.

To be eligible for an RPI ranking, a wrestler must have a minimum of 17 Division I matches at a given weight class. The top 33 wrestlers in the RPI are listed for each weight class

The full rankings and RPI of each weight class are available at NCAA.com.

The Lock Haven – Illinois connection

Lock Haven assistant coach Matt Lackey is no stranger to the colors of the Illini and recognized them well when they visited Thomas Fieldhouse last week.

Lackey, who is in his second season with the Bald Eagles graduated from Illinois in 2003.

He was a 2003 National Champion and the 2003 Big Ten Male Athlete of the Year.

Lackey finished his remarkable career at Illinois as a three-time All-American.

Did you know?

Derek Caldwell has competed at three different weight classes this year for The Haven (174/184/197).

Bonson making a name for himself:

The Central, Pa. native and University of Virginia transfer has quickly made a name for himself as a Bald Eagle.

Matt Bonson is 20-2 overall, 10-1 in duals and riding a four-match win streak.

Bonson was out of the lineup last weekend, but will return tomorrow night.

The 141-pounder was ranked No. 21 in coaches' poll and is as high as No. 13 in the Wrestling Report rankings.

Turner moving up in more ways than one:

Harry Turner made the move from 197 to 285 this season to help strengthen the Bald Eagles lineup and he's done just that.

Turner's thrilling win that came down to the final seconds vs. Hofstra was his team-best 23rd on the year.
