#14 Wrestling set for Virginia Duals, Bald Eagles to open with UVA Friday

The No. 14 LHU wrestling team (2-0) is set to return to dual action in a big way. The Bald Eagles will open the 2019 Virginia Duals Tournament Friday (Jan. 11) vs. Virginia at 9 a.m.

1/9/2019 7:22:00 PM

Setting the stage:
Led by Chance Marsteller, who is fresh off a second-place finish at the Southern Scuffle, the nationally-ranked LHU wrestling team is set to return to action this weekend. The No. 14 Bald Eagles will return to dual action in a big way as they will compete at the prestigious Virginia Duals Tournament for the 18th time. It marks Lock Haven's third straight trip to the event, hosted at the Hampton Coliseum in Hampton, Virginia. The 2019 Tournament is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, January 11-12.

The Bald Eagles have been tabbed as the tournament's No. 4 seed and will open the tournament Friday (Jan. 11) vs. Virginia at 9 a.m. Lock Haven is 2-0 on the season in dual action, but hasn't had a dual meet since December 16 when the Bald Eagles flew by rival Bloomsburg in Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) action, 36-6. Thanks to a win over George Mason in late November, both of Lock Haven's 2018-19 dual wins have come in EWL action.

Virginia is 7-5 on the season and has won three straight matches over Lock Haven. All-time, the series is deadlocked at 3-3. LHU and UVA last met at the Virginia Duals back on January 14, 2017. The Cavaliers – nationally-ranked at the time – topped Lock Haven, 31-11. It marked Virginia's second win over LHU during the 2016-17 season.

The winner of the Lock Haven – Virginia dual will meet the winner of a match between top-seed Arizona State and Oklahoma.

This week, Lock Haven is ranked No. 14 in the InterMat Dual Rankings and InterMat listed LHU at No. 25 in its Tournament Power Index. The Bald Eagles checked in at No. 20 in the National Wrestling Coaches' Association (NWCA) national poll.

The Haven trio of Chance Marsteller, Corey Hazel and Thomas Haines remained listed in the various media national rankings. Marsteller headlines the bunch with a No. 4 ranking by InterMat, FloWrestling and Amateur Wrestling News. Marsteller, a returning All-American took second at the Southern Scuffle and is 10-1 on the season at 165 pounds.

Last time at the Virginia Duals
Last season's trip to the Virginia Duals proved to be a wild one as the Bald Eagles went 3-1, with all four duals coming in one day on January 12, 2018. The Bald Eagles picked up wins vs. Fresno State, Bucknell and Chattanooga. Lock Haven was edged out by Oklahoma.

Virginia Duals history:
This weekend will mark Lock Haven's 18th appearance at the Virginia Duals. All-time, LHU is 33-31 at the tournament.

Lock Haven's last time out:
LHU opened the New Year at the Southern Scuffle and Chance Marsteller led the way, thanks to his second-place finish. Marsteller's second-place showing at 165 pounds led the Bald Eagles to their best ever finish at the tournament. Marsteller was one of four Bald Eagle placewinners at the tournament. Luke Werner finished fourth at 125 pounds. The Bald Eagles showed their depth at 141 pounds as both Kyle Shoop and DJ Fehlman placed. Shoop was fifth and Fehlman placed eighth. Marsteller's spot in the finals marked the Bald Eagles' first Southern Scuffle finalist since 2006 when Seth Martin won the title, the only individual Southern Scuffle title in LHU history. The Bald Eagles finished sixth overall in the team standings with 71.5 points.

March toward 100:
Kyle Shoop's march toward 100 career wins inches closer. The 141-pounder is sitting on 93 career wins (93-35) as he looks to become the 21st 100-match winner in LHU history. Earlier this season, the redshirt-junior set the school record for career tech falls. Shoop is 20-4 on the season with 10 tech falls. He now has 35 career tech falls after leading all of Division I in the category last season.

Shoop leads the nation in tech falls:
Kyle Shoop's 10 tech falls are currently the most of any NCAA Division I wrestler so far this season. Luke Werner has seven total and his six vs. DI opponents at 125 pounds have him ranked No. 8.
