Hall of Fame
Alex Monroe '14 is one of the most decorated distance runners in Lock Haven and NCAA Division II history.
A six-time All-American, Monroe became the first runner in program history to earn four consecutive NCAA Cross Country All-America honors. His third-place finish at the 2013 national championships remains the highest individual placement ever by a Bald Eagle. He added All-America accolades in the 3,000 meters (indoor, 2013) and 10,000 meters (outdoor, 2014), cementing his place among the nation's elite.
Regionally and within the conference, Monroe dominated competition. He was a three-time USTFCCCA Atlantic Region Athlete of the Year, three-time NCAA Atlantic Region Champion, and seven-time PSAC Champion. He won three straight PSAC Cross Country titles (2011–13) and remains the only Lock Haven athlete to sweep both the PSAC and Atlantic Region meets in three consecutive seasons. In total, Monroe earned 20 All-Atlantic Region and 14 All-PSAC honors over his career.
Monroe also excelled on the national and international stage. In 2011, he represented the United States at the Pan American Junior Games, earning silver in the 10,000 meters after finishing runner-up at the USA Junior Nationals. His post-collegiate career included two U.S. Olympic Trials appearances — in the 10,000m (2016) and marathon (2020) — and a senior U.S. team berth at the 2015 Great Edinburgh Cross Country Challenge in Scotland.
Still the school record holder in the indoor 3,000m (8:13.84), indoor 5,000m (14:17.86), and outdoor 10,000m (29:42.33), Monroe's times remain benchmarks for future generations. With personal bests of 13:36 in the 5,000m and 2:14:15 in the marathon, his legacy as a trailblazer, record-setter, and ambassador for Lock Haven athletics endures through his unmatched impact on the program.
